Choosing tack

Note: Finding tack that fits your horse comfortably and nicely is a very important step to ensure that you get the most out of your shoot. If you do not have a clean halter don't worry! We completely understand how hard it is to keep things clean around horses. Amanda Marie Photography always keeps a nice leather halter and lead on hand for clients to borrow during their sessions. When using your own halter for your session, always keep in mind that clean neutral toned halters are always best.

bridle

I recommend a properly fitted bridle to ensure that it does not rotate or move around on your horse's face while taking photos.

A simple bit always looks amazing in photos.

We recommend switching your horse into something simpler if you ride in a shadow roll, elevator bit, blinders, or bit guards. These items tend to hide the horses face and features as well as causes distractions from the simplicity of the image.

halter

Ensure that the halter you will be using is correctly fitted prior to your session and that your tack is cleaned up if necessary.

A leather halter is always a great option for a younger or retired horse. If you do not have a leather halter the next best thing is a neutral toned one.

If you do not have a leather halter don't worry. We always keep one handy, just be sure to let us know prior to your shoot that you'd need to borrow one.

Be sure to have a nice and clean lead rope for pictures. Leather lead ropes are always a great choice.

no tack

This is a great option if the images will be taken in an enclosed area such as a pasture. This option allows us to capture a relaxed interaction with you and your horse.

Please be mindful that this is only possible if your horse behaves well and stays by your side out of the halter.

session preparation tips

  • At least 10 minutes before your session your horse should be groomed and ready to go. Try your best to ensure that the preparation part of this is as stress free as possible for your horse so that they are relaxed and not anxious during the shoot.

  • If you plan on bathing your horse before the session, please be sure to give yourself enough time to ensure that your horse is completely dry for their session. If the horse is damp at all you will be able to see it in the images.
  • If it is possible we highly recommend using show sheen or something similar on your horse. This brings out the shine! Also, we suggest using a very small amount of baby oil in the ears and on the noses of your horse to help get rid of any dusty looking areas. Try not to forget fly spray!
  • Your horses' feet will be in the majority of images we take so if you have access to a foot polish, we recommend using some. One that dries quickly would be ideal so that dirt or any other debris will not stick to their feet.
  • Make sure your horses white markings are free of stains.
